The Best Crib Mattresses, Judged Against the Federal Firmness Test

Five crib mattresses that clear the 2022 federal standard, and what its firmness test measures that the word firm on the label never did.

A white crib with a bare mattress and baby clothes hanging from the rail in a sage-walled nursery
In this guide

A crib mattress is the cheapest important thing in a nursery. It costs a fifth of what the crib costs, it is chosen last, and it is the only part a baby is in direct contact with for two thousand nights.

It is also the one piece of nursery furniture whose central property has a federal test attached to it. Since August 2022 every crib mattress made or imported into the United States has had to pass a firmness test written into 16 CFR Part 1241. Before that date, firm was an adjective applied to whatever was being sold. After it, firm is a pass mark, and the pass mark is fifteen millimetres.

What the firmness test actually does

The federal standard incorporates ASTM F2933-21 and then adds requirements the voluntary standard did not have. The firmness test is the addition that matters, and the Commission modelled it on sections 6 and 8 of the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 rather than writing one from scratch.

The fixture is a rigid disc with a round footprint 203 mm across and a total mass of 5200 g, which is roughly the weight of a large newborn concentrated into an eight-inch circle. Overhanging the edge of that footprint is a flat bar 12 mm wide, sitting 15 mm above the bottom face of the disc and reaching 40 mm past it. The disc is placed on the mattress. The mattress passes if the bar never touches the sleep surface.

That is the whole test, and its elegance is worth noticing. It does not measure compression in pounds or rate a mattress out of ten. It asks one physical question: when a baby-sized weight presses into this surface, does the surface close around it? A mattress soft enough to let the disc sink more than fifteen millimetres is a mattress that forms a hollow, and a hollow is the geometry that suffocation happens in.

Two other additions arrived with the same rule. Full-size crib mattresses must now measure at least 27¼ in. (690 mm) wide and 51⅝ in. (1310 mm) long, and with a fitted cotton sheet on and the mattress pushed into the corner of the test frame, the remaining corner gap may not exceed 3.15 in. (80.0 mm). The sheet is not a fresh one. The standard requires it washed at 50°C or hotter and tumble dried on the highest setting at least twice, because a shrunken sheet is what pulls a mattress away from the crib frame in a real bedroom. That is a regulator testing the product in the state a household will actually have it in.

The third addition is for mattresses with springs in them. A 30 lb (13.6 kg) mass is dropped onto the mattress from six inches up, 250 times, at one impact every four seconds, then repeated at other points and on the other face. Afterwards there may be no exposed coil or wire. That is the standard's answer to springs working through a cover after a couple of years of a toddler using the crib as a trampoline.

What the standard still does not cover

Everything else on the box. The certification is a floor, and every mattress below is above it, so the floor does no sorting between them. It does not evaluate breathability, and no federal standard does. It does not assess organic claims, which belong to GOTS and its auditors. It says nothing about how the mattress behaves the third time somebody cleans vomit off it at two in the morning, which is what owner reviews are genuinely about and the property buyers underweight most.

So the sorting below is done on four things the standard leaves open.

Fit, which is a number you can check. The regulation sets a minimum size rather than a fixed one, and manufacturers publish their dimensions. Sealy's Firm Rest is listed at 51.63 by 27.25 inches, which is the federal minimum to the decimal. That is compliant and it is also the tightest legal fit, so a crib at the generous end of its own tolerance will leave a bigger gap with this mattress than with a larger one. Measure the crib interior before buying and put two fingers in the gap afterwards.

Whether you can clean it or only wipe it. Waterproof means the liquid stops at the surface. Washable means the thing goes in a machine. These are different products at different prices and most of the disappointment in this category is people discovering which one they bought.

Weight, because you will lift it more than you think. Changing a crib sheet at 3am means lifting a mattress one-handed while holding a rail. Seven pounds and thirteen pounds are different jobs in the dark.

Two sides or one. A dual-stage mattress has a firm infant face and a slightly softer toddler face and is turned over at around twelve months. It is the difference between one purchase and two.

Best for the lowest price that still buys a real innerspring and a second stage

Sealy Baby Firm Rest 2-Stage Crib Mattress

The value answer in the category and the one to buy if the budget is already spent. It is a 204-coil innerspring with a genuine toddler side, made in the United States, and GREENGUARD Gold certified, at a price where most competitors are single-sided foam. The catch is the one number Sealy publishes: 51.63 by 27.25 inches is the federal minimum size exactly, so check your crib's interior rather than assuming.

What works

  • 204 steel coils at a price where the alternatives are foam
  • A real second stage, so it lasts into the toddler bed rather than being replaced
  • Made in the USA and GREENGUARD Gold certified, which is unusual at this price
  • Waterproof surface, so the common accidents stop at the cover

What to know

  • Published at the federal minimum size, so the fit is the tightest legal one and worth measuring for
  • Heaviest option here, and you lift it every time a sheet changes
  • Wipe-clean only, with no washable component
  • Coil mattresses transmit more noise when a toddler moves than foam does

Best for the parent who will be changing sheets alone in the dark

Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress

At seven pounds this is roughly half the weight of the innerspring options, and weight is the specification that decides whether a 3am sheet change is a task or an ordeal. The cover comes off and goes in the machine, which is the feature most mattresses at this price do not have. It is single-sided, so it is one stage rather than two.

What works

  • Seven pounds, which makes one-handed sheet changes genuinely possible
  • Machine washable cover certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, not merely wipeable
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified for emissions in a room a baby breathes in for twelve hours a day
  • Cheapest route to a washable component rather than a waterproof surface

What to know

  • Single firmness, so there is no toddler side to turn to at twelve months
  • Foam cores soften over years in a way coils do not, and this is the budget foam
  • The cover washes but the core does not, which is the limit of what this price buys
  • Thinner than the premium options, at up to five inches

Best for the middle of the market, where dual-sided foam stops being a compromise

Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Dual-Sided Crib Mattress

Five inches of foam with a firm infant face and a softer toddler face, made in the United States, in a seamless medical-grade cover with no piping for liquid to get under. That last detail is why this one appears on so many second-baby lists: the failure point on a cheap mattress is the seam, and this design does not have one on the sleep surface.

What works

  • Seamless waterproof cover with no piping, which is where cheaper covers leak
  • Substantially lighter than an innerspring while still being dual-stage
  • Made in the USA with a hypoallergenic, wipe-clean surface

What to know

  • Twice the price of the Sealy for a mattress that is foam rather than coils
  • Wipe-clean rather than washable, despite the price
  • No GREENGUARD Gold listing on the Amazon page, unlike the cheaper options here
  • Five inches is thinner than some cribs' mattress supports expect

Naturepedic Organic 2-Stage Lightweight Crib Mattress product photo

Best for a buyer for whom the materials certification is the reason to spend

Naturepedic Organic 2-Stage Lightweight Crib Mattress

The one to buy if organic certification is what you are paying for, because Naturepedic holds the certifications rather than describing itself with the adjectives. GOTS certified organic cotton, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified and MADE SAFE, with a food-grade polyethylene waterproof layer instead of vinyl. Eleven pounds and dual-stage. It is three hundred dollars, and what that buys is provenance rather than performance.

  • Stacked third-party certifications: GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE
  • Dual-stage, with a firm infant side and a medium-firm toddler side
  • Waterproofing is food-grade polyethylene rather than vinyl

What to know

  • Three hundred dollars, which is three Sealys and a set of sheets
  • Eleven pounds, so lighter than an innerspring but not light
  • The certifications describe the materials, not how the mattress sleeps or lasts

Newton Baby Crib Mattress, All-Stages product photo

Best for households where the mattress itself is going to need washing, not just the cover

Newton Baby Crib Mattress, All-Stages

Buy this one for the washing, not for the breathing. The core and the cover both go in a machine, which no other mattress here can say, and for reflux or a run of stomach bugs that is a material difference. Newton also markets the open core as breathable, and that claim is doing more work in the advertising than the evidence supports. As a five-and-a-half-inch washable mattress at three hundred dollars it is a reasonable purchase. As protection, treat it as neutral.

What works

  • The entire mattress washes, core included, which is unique in this group
  • Five and a half inches thick, the deepest option here
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified
  • All-stages construction rather than a firm side and a toddler side

What to know

  • The breathability marketing outruns the evidence, and the AAP does not credit special mattresses with reducing risk
  • Three hundred dollars, the most expensive here, with much of the premium attached to that claim
  • Washing it is a real chore needing somewhere to dry a full crib mattress
  • Open-core mattresses feel unfamiliar and firm to anyone expecting a conventional one

On breathable mattresses, plainly

Breathability is the biggest marketing claim in this category and the one with the least behind it. Newton's own figure, from a CPSC-accredited laboratory, is that a baby gets 97% more air breathing through its mattress than through a conventional waterproof one. That number is probably accurate, and it measures airflow through a material rather than an outcome for a child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is direct about the gap. Its 2022 recommendations advise against special crib mattresses, wedges, positioners and home monitors marketed for reducing sleep-related death, on the grounds that none has been shown to do it and several introduce hazards of their own. Fern Hauck, a member of the AAP's Task Force on SIDS, has put the point about these mattresses specifically: as long as they meet the government safety standards they can be used, but they should not be marketed as preventing suffocation.

So breathability is a feature, not a safeguard. If the washable core is worth three hundred dollars to you, buy the Newton for that. The thing that reduces risk is the short list below, and it is free.

Questions people actually ask

How do I know a mattress passes the firmness test?

Any crib mattress manufactured or imported into the United States on or after 15 August 2022 has to comply with 16 CFR 1241, which includes the firmness test. Buying new from a mainstream retailer is how you know. The check that matters at home is different: press the middle with your palm and it should spring back at once and hold no impression.

What is the gap between the mattress and the crib supposed to be?

Small enough that two fingers do not fit between the mattress and the crib side. The federal standard tests this as a corner gap of no more than 3.15 inches with a twice-washed fitted sheet on, which is a laboratory version of the same idea. If your hand slides into the gap easily, the mattress is the wrong one for that crib.

Is a secondhand crib mattress ever a good idea?

No, and it is the one item in a nursery worth being firm about. Anything made before 15 August 2022 was never required to pass a firmness test, foam softens with years of use, and you cannot see what has soaked into a core. A ninety-dollar new mattress is the cheapest way to remove the question.

Do I need the toddler side at all?

It is convenience rather than safety. A dual-stage mattress is turned over at around twelve months so the child gets a slightly softer surface for the toddler bed years, which saves buying a second mattress later. A single-sided firm mattress stays safe and simply stays firm.

Are organic certifications worth three hundred dollars?

They are worth something real and they are not a performance claim. GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified and MADE SAFE are audited third-party programmes about what the materials are and what they emit. They say nothing about firmness, durability or fit, all of which the cheaper mattresses here also satisfy.

Where the mattress sits in the rest of the room

Buy it at the same time as the crib rather than after it. It is the piece people economise on once the total has climbed, and the piece the baby is actually touching.

How the standard came to exist is worked through at length in what firm actually means on a crib mattress, the companion to this guide. The frames these go into, and which conversion kits are genuinely in the box, are in the best cribs and bassinets. Two product categories left the market in 2022 without most shoppers noticing, covered in what the Safe Sleep for Babies Act banned. None of this travels, and a hotel room needs its own compliant surface rather than an improvised one, which is the best travel cribs and pack 'n plays. The toddler side becomes relevant at a point set by the child rather than the calendar, and that timing is in when to move a toddler from a crib to a bed.

How this guide was built

  • Manufacturer specification sheets and warranty terms, read in full rather than summarised from a listing.
  • The federal safety standard the product is certified to, plus anything NHTSA, the AAP or the CPSC has published on it.
  • Owner reports at volume, including the one-star reviews, which is where failure modes live.
